Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidence-based therapy which gives parents play therapy skills to help manage behaviors in a supportive, consistent way. PCIT uses live, real-time coaching during sessions to help parents apply positive parenting strategies with confidence and consistency.
PCIT involves two phases
Phase one: The first phase is child directed interaction where the child gets to be in charge of play while the parent works on learning basic play therapy skills. The focus is to boost the relationship during this phase.
Phase two: The second phase is parent directed interaction which implements structured discipline model aimed to the child learn to follow directions without conflict or anxiety.
PCIT for Older Children:
PCIT also offers an older child model that is tailored for children ages 7 to 10 years old. This model diversifies the approach to child’s age and an modifies the discipline phase to remain developmentally appropriate.

PCIT focuses on strengthening the parent-child relationship while teaching practical skills to manage challenging behaviors with consistency and confidence. Through live coaching and real-time support, parents learn effective strategies that encourage cooperation, improve communication, and foster stronger family connections both in and outside of therapy sessions.
